Here are this week's volunteer needs in the Yakima Valley:
* CLERICAL STAFF: EPIC Parker Heights Center in Wapato is looking for volunteers to help its clerical staff. Volunteers will assist with filing, organizing, answering phones and covering the front desk occasionally. Volunteers should have good organizational skills. Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) are helpful, but not required. All potential volunteers will need to fill out a volunteer packet and have a criminal background check.
Call Mamie Perdue at 248-3950, ext. 108.
* MENTOR PROGRAM: The Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration Mentor Program is looking for volunteers. They will help increase a juvenile offender's options for successful re-entry into his or her community. Volunteers will support and assist youths as they work toward their individual goals through weekly contacts and once a month face-to-face activities.
Initial mentor training must be completed along with a criminal background check. All interested volunteers must be at least 21 years old.
For more information, call Sirena Phillips at 574-1933.
* KITCHEN HELPERS: EPIC has two sites (Castlevale in Yakima and the Parker Heights Center in Wapato) needing kitchen helper volunteers. Volunteers would assist kitchen staff with basic food preparation, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, and preparing and delivering food carts. They will also assist with paperwork, and washing and sterilizing dishes.
Potential volunteers must fill out a volunteer packet, have a criminal background check and obtain a food handler's card.
For more information, call Sirena Phillips at 574-1933.
* READING TUTORS: Washington Reading Corps tutors are needed for the coming school year. Tutors will serve nearly 11 months of service working in the classroom tutoring children to meet grade-level reading requirements. Tutors receive a monthly stipend of $950, health insurance, student loan forbearance and excellent job skills training.
There are openings in Harrah and Toppenish. If interested in applying for an AmeriCorps position, contact Vernita Adolf at 457-2933 or v.a@yvoic.org.
* CRISIS LINE: Central Washington Comprehensive Mental Health is looking for volunteers to help with its 24-hour crisis line. Training will take place in October for 30 hours over the course of two weekends. Volunteers will be taught how to provide information and referrals; crisis intervention; and legal, medical and general advocacy for victims of crime. Once trained, volunteers will be able to take calls from their own homes. Volunteers will be helping crime victims dealing with sexual assault, identify theft, property crimes, child abuse, elder abuse, homicide, hate crimes, vehicular crimes and others.
If interested, call 576-4326.
