Elofson is strong candidate
To the editor -- I am writing to support David Elofson. I worked for David for 13 years as his legal assistant and then later as a Rule 9 Intern in the Law Clerk Program.
He mentored me in this program even though it took a great deal of his personal time. During that time, I was constantly amazed -- but not surprised -- at the respect that he received from his colleagues, his adversaries, and his clients. He, in turn, gave the same respect at all times. I was and still am continually inspired by his enthusiasm for the law in all areas.
There was never a client in the 13 years that I worked for him that he didn't give 100 percent to. His respect, honesty, experience, confidence and well-rounded nature -- as well as his contributions to the community -- are the qualities that best enable him to serve as a judge. Having worked in the legal field in Yakima for over 20 years, I find David's qualities not only unique, but exceptional. I believe that he is the person best suited to serve as Yakima County's next Superior Court judge. I urge you to vote for him.

Send Johnson to Olympia
To the editor -- I am voting for Norm Johnson to represent us in the 14th Legislative District as a state representative.
Norm has the needed experience to deal with legislative issues affecting our area. He is very knowledgeable in the educational arena and understands what problems our schools will be facing in the coming years. His tenure on the Yakima City Council and other Yakima Valley city/town councils has given him insight on issues our Valley communities are now addressing and must continue to address in the future -- crime, water, transportation, the economy, etc.
A vote for Norm will help strengthen our voice in Olympia.

Johnson's up to the job
To the editor -- I am voting for Norm Johnson for the 14th District House of Representatives, Position No.1 seat that is currently held by the retiring Mary Skinner. Mary has done an excellent job and I think replacing her will be difficult, but I think Norm is up to the job.
I have known Norm for more than 10 years and I think he will be a very good state representative.
As a local businessman and commercial property owner, I know that Norm will represent my interests. I know that Norm Johnson knows that small businesses are the backbone of this community. That's just one of the reasons I am supporting him.
The last thing we need in Olympia is a liberal Democrat representing Yakima. Norm Johnson is a conservative Republican and that's why he has my support.

Another good team
To the editor -- My friend Norm Johnson is running for the Washington state House of Representatives and I am proud to say that I endorse his campaign. Norm is exceptionally well-qualified and I encourage all my friends and neighbors to support this good man.
As state senator, I worked for many years with Reps. Jim Clements and Mary Skinner to speak for the 14th District in Olympia. We worked together well; we were a team.
We have the opportunity this year to send a new team to Olympia, a team consisting of Sen. Curtis King, Rep. Charles Ross and Norm Johnson. These three people have shown they can work together and that they can do good and important things for the Yakima Valley.
Norm Johnson has the experience and the skills necessary to be a good state representative. He has shown his love for our community and his willingness to be a faithful public servant. Norm will do an excellent job.
I also want to take this opportunity to thank my friend Mary Skinner for her years of outstanding service. Thank you, Mary. All my best to you and Hal.
Please join me in voting for Norm Johnson.

Elofson is best choice
To the editor -- While reading this endorsement for David Elofson, consider where he and I come from. I've practiced law in Yakima for 32 years. With 20 years practicing cases against David and 18 years against his opponent, I know both men and their work ethic well.
Based upon this invaluable experience, there is no question that David Elofson will make the best judge because of his common sense, compassion and historical ties to Yakima County. My colleagues agree with me as evidenced by David's win in the Yakima County Bar Poll.
David has the ability to see both sides of an issue, making common-sense decisions that lead to positive results. This image is reflected in this paper's endorsement of David.
David mentored early in his career with his father, Howard Elofson, and Max Vincent. They enjoyed successful law practices because of their honesty and integrity. David shares those qualities in his practice of law.
If you knew these men and if you know me, this is where David comes from: deep Yakima roots with common sense and an appreciation for the concept that there are always two sides to every story.
Vote Elofson for judge.

Elofson is up to challenge
To the editor -- I am writing this letter to encourage you to vote for Dave Elofson for Superior Court judge.
I have known Dave for more than five years and know that he is a dedicated lawyer with impeccable judgment. I have known Dave to be hard working, diligent and up for the challenges that the courts are up against. In a quest for truth, fairness and constitutional correctness, my vote is for Dave Elofson.

Ybarra will give seat at table
To the editor -- We have an opportunity this year to elect a person who will truly be able to represent this region of the state. That person is Vickie Ybarra. She will bring her experience in education and health care to the Democratic caucus in the Legislature. This is where the important decisions are made as to what legislation will be pushed for enactment. Her six Republican opponents mean well, I'm sure, but it's time we had a seat at the table in Olympia.

A sloppy Council job
To the editor -- I cannot believe that out of all our city staff, not one person thought to look for any documents concerning the mall ramp, yet one reporter found documents.
I think that it's time to clean house and vote in a City Council that is for the people. Only one council member had the guts to at least question what was going on and vote against the motion.
There is only one current City Council member who will get my vote.

Morrier isn't the bad guy
To the editor -- Yakima, methinks thee doth protest too much.
What is the communal negative mass hysteria about? Envy? What has this tough businessman done to earn the rancor and disdain of so many? Or, is the town full of begrudgers?
The Hilton Garden Hotel is successful because it is high quality. What does the man pay in real estate tax?
How many people receive a paycheck because of him?
How much public philanthropy comes from J.E.M. Enterprises?
Would the Great Western building get a paint job without him?
Yakima is growing up. The new orthopedic college is a fact. Did Joe chip in? Avoid cynicism and be tolerant, Yakima. The world is not out to get you. And neither is Joseph Morrier.
Step up and grow up with the city.

Elofson is best choice
To the editor -- I have practiced law in the Yakima Valley for over 60 years. During this time I have participated in the rating or selection of more than 20 Superior Court judges in Yakima County. I believe I have the experience to know and understand the qualities one must have to effectively serve in this capacity.
I have had the opportunity to observe David Elofson practice law here locally over the past 22 years. During that time, he has conducted himself with honor and integrity. He has been voted by his colleagues to be exceptionally qualified to serve in this capacity and I concur. I heartily place my support behind David and encourage Yakima County residents to do the same by voting for him to be our next Superior Court judge.

Like father, like son
To the editor -- David Elofson is the son of a good friend of mine, the late Howard Elofson. Howard was an excellent lawyer and a fine gentleman. It has been a heartwarming experience to see how much David reflects his father. And David wants to take the next step in his career by asking the voters to award him a seat on our Superior Court. David is well-equipped to serve our community in such an important position.

Memories of a fine judge
To the editor -- While I'm sure that the people running for Superior Court judge are well-qualified, what Yakima really needs is a reincarnation of Judge Roy Bean. Perhaps we could then clean up the gangs, graffiti taggers, rapists, drug dealers and growers, and thieves that abound in Yakima.
The only other thing we would need is a sturdy gallows built outside the courthouse.
