Remember that spat the Yakima City Council had earlier this year over endorsements and public hearings? Well, it came up for air again.
The Council took two confusing votes on the subject Tuesday, voting 4-3 against a hearing on Initiative 985 if sponsor Tim Eyman asks for one, and then 4-3 not to limit itself on holding other hearings in the future on other matters.
Why the issue popped up Tuesday night was unclear. It goes back to February, when the Council publicly squabbled after a hearing over the school district's proposed operating levy.
Exposing a philosophical difference among a group that mostly proclaims itself Republican, the Council in March narrowly endorsed giving endorsements.
For now it also continues to endorse public hearings, although the majority voting bloc led by Mayor Dave Edler believes hearings should be limited to local issues only.
Initiative 985, Eyman's latest, seeks to reduce traffic congestion and has been derided by his critics on the council as mainly a westside issue. It will appear on the November ballot in the general election.
