UPDATE Ybarra, Johnson advance in 14th District House race
Incumbent county commissioner Ron Gamache ousted from race

Democrat Vickie Ybarra and Republican Norm Johnson emerged Tuesday from a crowded field of candidates for the state 14th District House seat soon to be vacated by veteran Republican lawmaker Mary Skinner.

They will advance to the Nov. 4 general election.

In the Yakima County Commission race, Republican Kevin Bouchey received nearly 40 percent of votes cast. He’ll face Democrat Jesse Farias, who earned 29 percent of votes. The outcome effectively eliminates incumbent Ron Gamache, who earned just 20 percent of votes.

David Elofson defeated Rob Lawrence-Berry 55 percent to 44 percent in the race for Yakima County Superior Court judge, Department 5.

Ybarra received 32 percent of votes cast in the 14th District race. Johnson captured 21 percent of the votes in the crowded Republican field. Al Schweppe and Bob McLaughlin each received about 12 percent of the vote, as did Scott Hess, a 35-year-old political newcomer who ran as a hard-line conservative.

Aubrey Reeves garnered 6 percent of the vote, and J.J. Sandlin, who pulled out of the race but whose name remained on the ballot, received nearly 4 percent of votes.

In Benton County, a longtime advocate of moving the county seat to Kennewick, Fred Staples collected more votes than incumbent commissioner Leo Bowman, according to late unofficial results.

A third candidate for the commission seat, Merle Johnson, trailed and will not advance to November’s general election.

Staples, a retired Benton County Superior Court judge collected 2,923 votes, or about 40 percent. Bowman, collected 2,715 votes or about 38 percent. Johnson trailed with 1,579 votes or not quite 22 percent.
