YAKIMA-BASED TEAM TO BE HONORED: The Washington Browns, a Yakima-based team that played in the days of the old Negro leagues, will be honored Sunday night.
Originally the St. Louis Blues, a barnstorming team out of Mississippi, the squad was composed of standout college players. It was brought north from Oakland, Calif., in 1936 by Yakima businessman Edward Porter, who then took over sponsorship of the team.
The Browns played at Yakima High School and this season marks the 70th anniversary of Bill Foster's debut as the team's player-manager. Foster was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996.
Guests will include the wives of several Browns players as well as Lyle Wilson, who authored a book entitled Yakima's African-American Baseball Teams.
The first 500 fans will receive a photo of the 1937 Browns.
CIRILLO VISIT ANNOUNCED: Jeff Cirillo, who played for the Mariners among six major league teams, will appear at the Bears Monday home game with Boise.
Cirillo will meet fans and sign autographs before the game and will throw out the first pitch. The pre-game ceremony is scheduled for 6:50 p.m. with the first pitch set for 7:05.
Cirillo was a two-time all-star (1997 with Milwaukee and 2000 with Colorado) and batted .296 over his 14-year major league career. In 2002 with Seattle, Cirillo batted .249.
THEY'RE INVITED: Eight Bears have been asked to participate on the Diamondbacks' Arizona Instructional League team next month.
Pitchers Ryan Clark, Jordan Meaker, Wade Miley and Sean Morgan were selected along with position players Ryan Babineau, David Cooper, Justin Parker and Alfredo Marte.
The league begins Sept. 17 and lasts 28 days. The team will consist mostly of first and second year players for the D-backs.
INJURY UPDATE: Ryan Babineau (thumb) and Brendan Duffy (wrist) are closer to returning to action from their respective problems, according to Yakima manager Bob Didier, but will need several more days of recovery. Pitcher Amado Rosario's wrist has not allowed him to throw yet, and catcher Jhoan Pimentel, who sustained a recent knee injury, was be available Tuesday only for backup duty. Didier said middle infielder Greg Bordes was Gerardo Bustamante's emergency backup during the past two games at Tri-City.
